I am a collector of pie birds. I have several and am always on the lookout for these unique ceramic birds. Some have color, some are plain white, and some are not in the bird shape at all. The purpose of a pie bird is to vent the pie, allowing steam to escape. In doing so, the pie doesn’t boil over, and the crust doesn’t get soggy. Think of it like a chimney to let off the pressure.

Much like pies, we all need something in our lives that relieves pressure and helps us let off steam. I challenge you to think about what this looks like for you. We all have things in our lives that cause us worry, anger, or frustration. But do we all have the tools—or pie birds—in place to keep those stressors from boiling over? These are actions or activities that can help us stay fresh and crisp and prevent us from becoming depressed, worn down or even falling apart.
For me, the pressure relief often comes with getting to one of my safe havens and having a long, hot tub soak. Other times, it is having a great conversation with my close family or friends, who, without judgment, let me vent and get it out. And when I am really upset, my pie bird is getting a good house cleaning done. What’s your pie bird? How can you channel your emotions in a way that keeps you from blowing up and having regret later? Emotions are energy that needs to go somewhere, in some manner. Walking, talking, singing, baking (my pie birds serve a dual purpose), whatever you choose, having that outlet ready can be a lifesaver. Think about what you can use to help you release those tougher emotions and the pressures that build in your daily life.
