Nothing in life stays the same. Often we let fear creep in to overtake our health and our own happiness. Owning thriving life in a rapidly changing world can be challenging. Working with a coach that is cognizant of the Stages of Change and helps you understand them can be of great support. There are six components that make up the Stages of Change model.
- Precontemplation
- Contemplation
- Preparation
- Action
- Maintenance
- Relapse
Working with your coach, you can identify where you are in the process of making change, what to expect, and how to prepare for what might happen during that time. Here are some short definitions of each stage.
Precontemplation – “Ah, I am always going to be stuck here. I should just quit trying. I cannot do this anyway.”
Contemplation – “If I do this, I can achieve that.” I want to lose 10 pounds, but I don’t want to give up my favorite cookies to do it.”
Preparation – “I wrote down my goals today. And I checked the distance from my office to home, maybe I can walk a couple of times per week.”
Action – “I did it! I walked to work three times this week. I even invited a friend for a quick break time walk! I am celebrating by getting my hair cut in a cute style that I love.”
Maintenance – “I am committed to getting my walks in each week. I have built the time into my schedule and frequently invite others to share with me. Walking meetings allow me to accomplish two things at once.”
Relapse – “I am so frustrated to have let myself down. I can see how it affects my daily life and I am willing to acknowledge this setback. I’ll visit with my coach to get back on track.”
Life is messy. It is never a straight line. Go easy on yourself, develop your goals, write them down and find support to be your cheerleaders.
